Bal Health Mela and Annual Night School Day
Recognizing the evolving needs of the community, the community of the Retreat initiated night schools in response to the signs of the times, aiming to address the educational requirements of the children residing on the hill for the poor children to come and study in the evening. These night schools significantly enhance students’ academic abilities, leading to a notable decrease in drop-out rates. Widely praised by both parents and students, our night schools now encompass night directly managed locations: Jerina Nagar, Murugan Nagar, M.G.R. Nagar, Longlipet, Kovilmedu, Kommakadu, Vasambadi, with the recent addition of Kolagur.
The Annual Night School Day for the year 2024 was held on the 10th of March, commencing with registrations at 9:30 am. Approximately 120 children, accompanied by their night school teachers, graced the occasion with their presence. At 10:00 am, the day commenced with a solemn Holy Eucharist celebrated by Fr. Arul Maran, the Rector of the Retreat, and co-celebrated by Fr. James, the director of the night schools. This prayerful start set the tone for the day’s events, fostering a sense of reverence and community.
Following the Eucharist, at 11:15 am, Mr. Naveen conducted an enlightening session for the students on the theme of the usefulness and challenges of social media. This session provided valuable insights and proved to be an eye-opening experience for the students. At 12:30 pm, the students were divided into four teams to participate in various party games. Their enthusiastic participation infused the atmosphere with joy and energy, reflecting the spirit of friendship and fun.
Lunch was served at 1:00 pm, after which preparations for the cultural programs commenced. At 2:30 pm, the cultural programs began, showcasing the talents of the night school students through mesmerizing performances including dance, singing, drama, and recitations. The presence of Sr. Leodith from St. Anne’s Convent, Yercaud, as the chief guest, added prestige to the event. In her speech, she encouraged the students to excel in their studies and extracurricular activities. Sr. Leodith, along with the Retreat’s rector, distributed gifts to each night school and students who had excelled in academics and extracurricular pursuits.
A special mention of gratitude was extended to the Grand Palace Hotel, Yercaud, for generously gifting play kits to each night school. Their contribution has made a significant impact on the lives of the children attending our night schools, and we cannot thank them enough for their kindness and generosity. The play kits they have provided will not only bring joy and happiness to these children but also contribute to their overall development and well-being. Their commitment to supporting education and fostering a nurturing environment for underprivileged children is truly commendable. We deeply appreciate their partnership and support in our efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of those in need. Their generosity serves as an inspiration to us all.
The day concluded with tea and snacks served to the participants at 4:00 pm, providing a refreshing break. As the students and teachers departed from the campus, they carried with them hearts full of joy and satisfaction, marking the success of yet another memorable Annual Night School Day. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants, organizers, sponsors, and supporters for their contributions in making this event a resounding success.
